The Valley of Desolation is a central zone within the Realm of Hostile Plains in Death Howl, the tactical grid deck builder developed by The Outer Zone and published by 11 bit studios. This arid region connects the Moors of Withered Memories to Cadaver Dunes and serves as the hub for two major side quests, multiple hidden caves, and key collectibles. Exploring this map thoroughly rewards players with the Skull Fylge summon card, the Amber Figurine totem, and progress toward secret achievements.

Valley of Desolation Map Overview and Navigation

Players enter the Realm of Hostile Plains through the Realm of Distorted Hollows. From the central Sacred Grove of the Moors of Withered Memories, taking the northeastern path through a few Spirit encounters leads directly into the Valley of Desolation.

The first Sacred Grove in the zone sits just past the initial Spirit battles as you head south from the entry path. Further south and southeast, the map opens toward a dark body of water and an exit leading down to Cadaver Dunes.

The Water Bearer Side Quest and Bisti Boss Fight

The Water Bearer quest unlocks a hidden cave along the southern edge of the Valley of Desolation map and rewards players with three Teardrops and the Water Bearer achievement.

  1. Interact with the cracked stone carving of a beetle located at the far north side of the map, just south of the Howling Mountain, to receive a cryptic riddle.
  2. Defeat the local Elder Spirits across the area to collect three required offering relics: a Goat's Eye (from the Elder Horned Menace in the cave northeast of the northern Sacred Grove), a Serpent's Head or Elder Seducer Head (from the Elder Coiled Seducer west of the middle Sacred Grove), and a Piece of Tooth (from the Elder Infected Molar northeast of the northern Sacred Grove).
  3. Travel south to the body of dark water beside the rock carving in the southeastern part of the map.
  4. Interact with the water and select the option to throw in the offering. A cutscene will trigger showing the lake draining away into another world, exposing a hidden cave entrance.
  5. Enter the drained lake cave to face Bisti, an antlion-like mini-boss.

Bisti enters the grid with 20 HP, 20 movement capability, and the ability to reposition or scurry away when hit. Ranged attacks such as Piercing Fate help counter Bisti's high mobility. Defeating Bisti completes the quest, awards three Teardrops, and unlocks the Water Bearer achievement.

Scattered Senses Quest: Finding Ro's Mother's Relics

The Scattered Senses side quest begins in the western section of the Valley of Desolation. Interacting with the giant face of Ro's mother emerging from the sands triggers a dialogue tasking Ro with locating four scattered senses spread across the four realms of the Spirit World.

Mother's SenseRealmExact Map Location
The Eye (Sight)Realm of Gloomy WatersThe Wailing Marshes, at the very northern edge of the map directly below the northern Sacred Grove
The Nose (Smell)Realm of Distorted HollowsMeadows of Delusion, southern path heading west from the southeastern Sacred Grove
The Ear (Hearing)Realm of Piercing WindsThe Hidden Vale, inside a small alcove between two Spirit encounters on the western side
The Tongue (Taste)Realm of Gloomy WatersDead Roots, southwestern section near the edge of the small lake

After interacting with all four objects in their respective regions, return to the giant face in the Valley of Desolation. Speaking with her completes the quest, granting the Scattered Senses achievement and the Amber Figurine totem. The Amber Figurine provides 5 Block on your first turn and ignores the next incoming ailment.

Hidden Caves and the Skull Fylge Card

North of the first Sacred Grove in the Valley of Desolation, players can clear a Spirit pack and interact with a rock to reveal a hidden cavern. Inside, Ro must defeat an Elder Spirit encounter featuring a hostile skull entity.

After completing the fight, interact with the dead mouse skull at the back of the chamber. A cutscene will play, rewarding the Skull Fylge card.

Like all Fylge summon cards in Death Howl, the Skull card costs 2 mana to play, is realmless, exhausts after a single cast per battle, and can be placed on any unoccupied grid tile. On the battlefield, the Skull summon features:

  • 8 Hit Points
  • Up to 3 movements per turn
  • A push effect applied to its attacks
  • The ability to move after attacking, allowing it to disengage safely from retaliating enemies

Crafting Materials in the Valley of Desolation

Clearing regular and Elder Spirit encounters in the Valley of Desolation yields specific body parts required for card crafting, alongside overworld gathering nodes scattered across the sands.

Overworld nodes throughout the map contain Yellow Angrite, Molten Gloomstone, Child's Teeth, Floodstalk, Skeleton Shrub, and Pricklebloom. Spirit drops recorded in this zone include the Eye of Elder Horned Menace, Horn of Horned Menace, Pebbles of Crumbler, Horn of Elder Skulldog, Fur of Skulldog, Tail of a Coiled Seducer, Head of Elder Coiled Seducer, Tooth of Sandbiter, Phlegm of Infected Molar, Ore of Elder Crumbler, Root of Elder Infected Molar, Tail of Elder Sandbiter, and Leg of Crawling Terror.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you unlock the path to Cadaver Dunes from the Valley of Desolation?

Head to the southeastern Sacred Grove in the Valley of Desolation, defeat the guarding Spirit encounters along the downward passage, and continue through the Elder Spirit combat containing a Totemite to reach the first Sacred Grove of Cadaver Dunes.

What should you do if the Water Bearer lake will not drain?

The offering at the southeastern lake requires all three relics: the Goat's Eye, Serpent's Head (Elder Seducer Head), and Piece of Tooth. Verify that all three corresponding Elder Spirit fights around the northern and western sections of the map have been defeated before interacting with the water.

Can you have multiple summons active alongside the Skull Fylge?

No. The game rules restrict players to having only one Fylge summon active on the battlefield at a time. Summoning a new creature replaces the current one, and all summon cards carry the exhaust property.
